ceal floyer - documenta (13)

'Til I Get It Right'(2005), a sound piece created from the refrain of the classic song of the same title by Tammy Wynette, also embraces notions of vulnerability and the potential of failure. Floyer digitally excised the words "falling in love" and looped the remaining "I'll just keep on / til I get it right" in eternal repetition. Though she claims to be trying to minimize any meaning beyond the literal that could be read into the work, one can't help but understand the laconic line - sung with a silky voice but with the romance edited out, and gaining Sisyphean dimensions through merciless repetition - as a comment on the futility of trying to reach perfection as an artist, or of artistic production itself.
